In just over 3.5 years, Ruby Franke has built the 8 Passengers social media brand into one of the most successful and recognized family channels on the internet. The 8 Passengers YouTube channel has produced approximately 1000 video blogs (or “vlogs”) and had amassed more than 800 million video views and nearly 4 billion minutes watched. Ruby’s channel has accrued nearly 2 million Youtube subscribers, and grows at an average rate of approximately 1,500 new subscribers per day. 8 Passengers receives approximately 800,000 to 1.2 Million video views per day. However, this is only half of the story! Ruby has directly partnered with numerous companies and brands including Walmart, Comcast, Wet Ones hand wipes, Universal Studios, JCPenney, Chicos, DJI drones, Waymo automated vehicles, Google, and many, MANY others to advertise their products or services. These efforts have made Ruby one of the most exclusive and sought after social media influencers in the industry. She is regularly solicited for consulting, coaching, and/or shout-outs, but chooses to focus her efforts and attention only where it is the most beneficial. She has been particularly influential among tweens, teens, and mothers, leading her to be specifically recognized by Youtube on its Instagram page (with 15.3 million followers) on Mother’s Day in 2018. She is in the process of writing a self-help book for mothers, which she plans to publish in 2019 or 2020.

Kevin Franke is an associate professor of civil engineering at Brigham Young University. He is also a professionally licensed civil engineer with nearly 15 years consulting experience. Despite his young age, Prof. Franke has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and journal papers, and has been awarded nearly $3 Million dollars in external research funding since joining BYU in 2012. Dr. Franke’s research has been highlighted multiple times by BYU News and BYU The Magazine, particularly his work involving post-earthquake engineering reconnaissance using drones. His research is also been featured by recognized articles or shows including sUAS News, Gizmodo.com, The Discovery Channel, and several local news networks. Dr. Franke has advised more than 15 graduate students to completion of their degrees since 2012, and he currently advises and mentors more than 12 BYU students in their research activities. Prof. Franke has received numerous teaching awards from his department and college, as well as the prestigious Utah Engineering Council Engineering Educator of the Year in 2016, which includes ALL engineering educators from ALL departments across ALL of Utah’s universities. Dr. Franke recently was awarded continuing faculty status (ie., tenure) from BYU in 2018, and currently serves as the undergraduate coordinator for his department. He has a strong understanding of what universities are looking for in applicants, and can help develop viable and sustainable strategies for success in an engineering education and career.

This handmade bench has a bit of AHS history built into it…literally.  The solid, cherry benchtop is made from reclaimed portions of the school’s second-floor library shelving units, which were disposed of two years ago to make room for the current middle- and high-school math department.  The sturdy, metal base is made from reclaimed portions of the school’s fencing previously surrounding the North parking lot.  The oils, stains, paint, and finishing techniques are all meant to give this reclaimed bench the look and texture of a weather-tested antique.  Many hours across many Saturdays went into creating this truly one-of-a-kind bench…you won’t find another like it anywhere.
