Kayson Brown

Kayson Brown is a passionate music educator whose primary goal is to inspire audiences and the young musicians he directs. As the founder of the Lyceum Music Festival and director of the  Lyceum Orchestras Program at American Heritage School, he oversees the largest youth orchestra program in the state of Utah and a nationally significant summer music festival. In all these endeavors, Kayson seeks to connect talented young musicians with their music industry counterparts and has succeeded in attracting a national audience to the meaningful music made by Utah’s talented youth.

Kayson has produced, conducted, orchestrated and arranged numerous albums both independently and with the Lyceum Philharmonic. He has been featured conducting on nationally televised PBS Specials with The Piano Guys, recorded for SONY Masterworks and has been recognized by Best of State Utah and American String Teachers Association as one of the leading music educators in the nation. His music and student musicians have been heard over 125 million times on YouTube and have reached the top of the Billboard Charts on three separate albums.

Kayson holds a Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting from Brigham Young University where he served as conducting and cello faculty. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance from the University of Utah and has one of the leading websites and YouTube Channels to teach cello online via Learn2PlayCello.com. He has nearly two decades of experience conducting more than 25 symphony orchestras including professional, university, community, and educational ensembles nationwide.

Sam Tsugawa

Samuel Tsugawa is an associate professor of music education at Brigham Young University (BYU), and holds Bachelors and Masters of Music Education degrees from BYU and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music education from Arizona State University. As an orchestra teacher in the public schools for 28 years, ensembles under Dr. Tsugawa’s baton had a reputation as outstanding performance groups.

Recognized by his colleagues as an accomplished classroom teacher, Dr. Tsugawa has received state educator of the year honors as Phi Delta Kappa’s Utah Walmart Teacher of the Year. State arts and music education organizations have presented Dr. Tsugawa with the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Legacy Award for Excellence in Arts Education, the Utah High School Activities Association Distinguished Service Award, and music educator of the year honors from the Utah American String Teachers Association and Utah Music Educators Association.

Dr. Tsugawa has a growing number of publications and has presented papers and workshops at national and international research and practitioner conferences. He has published in the American String Teacher, International Journal of Community Music, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and the International Journal of Music Education. His teaching interests, research, and publications focus on older adult music learning, music teacher education, popular music, action research, and orchestra classroom pedagogy. Dr. Tsugawa served as president of the Utah Music Educators Association and Western Division President for the National Association for Music Education and as a member of NAfME’s National Executive Board.

Lisa Brodie

Lisa Brodie is a conductor, violinist, and singer.  She has over 25 years experience conducting and coaching youth orchestras of all levels. Prior to joining the Lyceum Orchestra program as a conductor, Lisa  conducted with the Timpanogos String Orchestra program (TCO).  Students from this program went on to study at Eastman, Colburn School of Music, New England Conservatory, Interlochen, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, BYU, and U of U, among others. Lisa is excited to bring her love of working with young musicians to the Lyceum Orchestra program. She comes from a musical family, her mother is a professional violinist and conductor, and all four of Lisa’s children  perform professionally in classical, jazz and composition. Lisa currently teaches advanced violin students, loves to play classical and bluegrass mandolin and is currently taking organ lessons. Never stop learning!

Bix Hollenbach

Dwayne “Bix” Hollenbach is an in-demand studio musician and has performed with the Utah Symphony, Ballet West, Reno Chamber Orchestra, toured the country for 5 years with Broadway productions. He has performed at the Grand Ole Opry as well as in venues across the United States. Mr Hollenbach holds a Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from Manhattan School of Music and pursued Doctoral studies at University of Kentucky. He previously taught trumpet at Temple University and University of Reno. 

Mr. Hollenbach is passionate about music education and in addition to being an active performer, directs bands at Timberline Middle School and is active with the American Fork and Lone Peak High School Marching Band programs. He is a dedicated father to a musical family including his wife Emily and their four children. 

Amanda Riley

As long time supporters of the Lyceum Orchestra program at American Heritage School, Amanda Riley and her family traveled from Beaver to American Fork each week to have their children participate. After many years of traveling, Amanda is excited to have moved to Highland and to be conducting the Chamber Ensemble. Amanda was formerly the Orchestra and Choir Director at Beaver High School and a general music educator at Belknap Elementary School in Beaver. She is also a graduate of Brigham Young University. Amanda followed her love for music as she started each of her young children playing the violin starting at age three and studied beside each of them. She was the recipient of the UTASTA Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2015. Her love for music, her family and youth has driven her to have a successful program where students feel safe, encouraged and allowed to follow their dreams. Amanda has a passion for touching student’s lives and inspiring them to achieve excellence.

Carolyn Lundberg

Carolyn Lundberg has been part of the Lyceum orchestra organization since 2008 and currently enjoys being able to teach the Prelude Strings and Crescendo Orchestra at American Heritage. After graduating from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s in Piano Performance and Pedagogy (teaching) under the tutelage of Dr. Irene Peery Fox, she went on to become active in performing other instruments as well including the cello, harp, organ and voice. She has many years of experience working with children in public school orchestras as well as maintaining a private studio and conducting vocal choirs and other civic orchestras. She and her husband Dean enjoy running a busy musical family of 8 (including foster children). She is a member of the Lindon City Council, runs her own business, and is an active musician with the Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra, Pleasant Grove Civic Symphony and other arts organizations across the state.
