Why AHS? — People!! Never have I found so many kind, generous, and dedicated people in one school. This includes the entire school community: teachers, administration, staff, and families. I’ve never worked in a better environment, an environment where we all have the same goals and we all have the same beliefs.

What have you learned at AHS? — Besides understanding more about the amazing curriculum I teach (like diagramming and US history), I have gotten a better feeling about who I am. AHS has given me experiences that have taught me more about myself than I ever knew I could learn.

Curriculum highlight — The Secret Garden- this has always been one of my favorite books of all time. We read it in the spring when the earth begins to wake up after being asleep for a time. The main reason I love this book so much is because it teaches us that change is possible. Happiness and love can come to those who have never received it or those who feel like they just don’t deserve it. Not only does it teach us that change is possible, but it teaches that usually this change doesn’t come naturally. It is something that we have to work at for ourselves. I love that!!

What Brought You to American Heritage School?

My children first brought me to AHS. When my oldest was in third grade, I started looking for something different, a place where his fullest potential could be drawn out of him.

The moment my husband and I walked in the doors, we felt like we were in the right place. (That day happened to be the same day as the Christmas celebration and teddy bear hug.) We transferred my two oldest children to the school just weeks later. As the weeks went by and we started to get adjusted to a different school culture, my husband and I tried to come to the school as often as possible.

Every time we came my husband told me that he thought I would work here someday. At the time, I was a stay-at-home mom and had no intention of returning to work. Just a few months after my children started at AHS, a permanent substitute job became available. We thought it might be the perfect opportunity to see if working at the school would be the right fit for our family. Turns out it was. I was hired onto the 4th grade team the following year and have been here now for five years.
