What brought you to American Heritage School? My family came up from Los Angeles during Covid. My children were required to distance learn online. At the time, my 8th grader asked if he could go to school in person here in Utah. We toured American Heritage School and when we walked past the hall of prophets my son turned to me and said, “I have to come to this school.” We never went home. A couple years later an opportunity to be a Middle School Aide became available and then an 8th grade teaching position opened. Being with the youth is a privilege. Sharing my testimony of my Savior, Jesus Christ, is an honor. Walking into my classroom each day and looking at “His-Story” is a gift.
Student Interaction – Being in the classroom with Middle Schoolers is the best! They are honest and fun and funny! I love this age. We have been known to break into song together and laugh through the hard. I enjoy getting to see them each day. We learn from each other and that is best part. Often, one might hear that middle school can be a challenging time. This is why I appreciate the “homeroom model” at American Heritage School. We have the opportunity to really know each other and grow together. We “see” one another and have each other’s backs.
Curriculum Highlights – Each morning we begin our day with a morning devotional. I have sat in awe as I listen to students bear testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I feel their strength and I am inspired to feel their love of the Lord. They are bold in their beliefs and share their thoughts and feelings comfortably. I admire them.
Some subjects we cover during 8th grade are learning about US History from the Revolutionary War to current events, reading books about Dr. Ben Carson and Corrie ten Boom and writing essays about their ancestors as well as about themselves. It is rewarding to watch students grow in confidence as they develop their writing skills and put effort into their learning.
Family – I am the youngest of 4 children and I am married to the oldest of 7. We have 2 sons. We live 4 doors down from my parents. It is a gift to be surrounded by family. Family dinners, movie nights, celebrations – being together is a blessing.
Education – I have been involved with the youth volunteering for over 20 years. I was PTA President at my children’s elementary school and spent many hours in the classroom. Currently, I am a FranklinCovey coach, assisting students with The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The 4 Essential Roles of Leadership, and The 5 Choices. My Bachelor’s Degree is in Business Administration. I had the honor of serving a mission in Asuncion, Paraguay.
“Life is meant to be lived and experienced. Seeing Heavenly Father’s hand in our lives is easy when we look for it. We have opportunities to learn and grow each day and it is our choices that will guide the way.”
